SweetGeorgia Team Spotlight: Chun Hoi Chan

Every time you receive an order from SweetGeorgia, Chun Hoi Chan (Hoi) is responsible for the shipping (and often the dyeing) of your order. He is our Precision Dyer & Studio Assistant. Hoi is incredibly friendly and wonderful, which is why we wanted to spotlight him this month so our community can know him a bit better.

Needle Felting Artist

Hoi is an artist in his own right with his amazing drawings! Then in 2023, he decided to try needle felting at one of our SweetGeorgia Knit at Noon in-person crafternoons, and hasn’t stopped. Very quickly, he began making incredible felted figures that occasionally decorate the front of the studio for everyone’s enjoyment.

The first and most ambitious felted figure he planned and created was a resemblance to his very handsome cat named Coffee. From dyeing the wool to felting the piece, it took many months of work to achieve a result that everyone at the studio admires.

From Nemo to Snoopy and Pokémon, nothing is beyond Hoi’s felting abilities. Sometimes, he takes commissions and felts likenesses of beloved pets for people who will treasure them forever. My cousin has figurines of his two Chihuahuas keeping him company at his office, thanks to Hoi.

Plying Tips for Handspun Yarn Success

WHAT is Plying? Plying is when bobbins containing handspun singles are removed from the wheel, placed on a lazy kate, and then subjected to more twist.  To achieve a balanced yarn, more twist is added in the opposite direction of the first twist. This is not always the case, however. Some designer yarns add the second twist in the same direction as the first twist. This article is a review of some of the key aspects of plying handspun for balanced yarns using a spinning wheel. Transforming handspun singles into multi-ply yarn offers numerous benefits. WHY Ply?
