Our Mystery Bag Sale: Creative Ideas for Yarn & Fibre Surprises

It’s that time again. Every year, we have our Mystery Bag Sale, and it is on now from February 20th to March 20th, 2026, or while supplies last. It is one of our most popular sales of the year. While it doesn’t really need promoting, we do sometimes hear from people wondering what they can do with yarn or fibre when they don’t know what they are getting. We thought it would be fun to share just a few of the ways you can use these Mystery Bags.

Why Do We Do These Mystery Bags?

First of all, it helps to explain why these Mystery Bags exist and what you can expect to find inside them.

Seconds

If you have shopped with us before, you know we only sell quality products and colourways that we can reproduce consistently. After we hand-dye a batch of yarn or fibre, we inspect it carefully. If it doesn’t meet our standards, we categorize it as a Second. Many of these yarns and fibres are still beautiful, so we include them in our Mystery Bags for you to enjoy.

Experiments

We love colour and are always experimenting, especially for our SweetGeorgia Secret Stash Club. When deciding on a new colourway, we start with a theme and a colour palette, but we don’t always get it on the first try. We are particular about matching the original vision with the finished product, so we often dye them multiple times until it feels right. These experimental and one-of-a-kind batches also make their way into our Mystery Bags.

Discontinued

From time to time, a colourway needs to retire, or we may have a few leftover skeins or braids from a limited-time release. When this happens, any remaining stock is moved into our Mystery Bags.

How Do We Bundle The Mystery Bags?

You might be wondering what kind of yarn or fibre you can expect in these bags. The answer is that it could be anything from our entire line-up. This includes yarns or fibres we don’t normally carry, as we occasionally use new bases for Secret Stash and limited colourways. We do, however, organize the bags into more predictable categories.

  • Lace: anything laceweight
  • Minis: a random mix of different yarn weights
  • Mohair: various yarn weights that include mohair
  • Non-Mohair Fingering: fingering-weight yarns without mohair
  • Non-Mohair DK: DK-weight yarns without mohair
  • Non-Mohair Worsted: worsted-weight yarns without mohair
  • Spinning Fibres: a variety of spinning fibres

We do our best to pair yarns and fibres that work well together if you choose to use them in the same project, but the colours themselves remain a mystery.

Different Ways to Use These Mystery Bags

There are many ways to use Mystery Bags so they don’t just sit in your stash.

Learning Materials

In the School of SweetGeorgia, we often see that it can be hard to use precious stash as learning material. Many people don’t want to feel like they are wasting it. Mystery Bags make it easier to practice with high-quality materials at a lower price, which takes away some of that pressure. This works especially well for spinning, blending, and sampling new techniques.

Stash Up to Stash Down

If you have single skeins in your stash with no clear purpose, sometimes adding something unexpected can help unlock ideas for how to use what you already own. Mystery Bags can shake things up, especially if you tend to buy the same colours over and over again. And when you find multiple skeins that work together, you can use them for hand-knit colourwork, woven stripes, or even pops of colour in crochet projects.

Sampling & Swatches

You might have the exact amount of yarn needed for a project and are hesitant to use it for swatching, especially when swatches need cutting. Having extra yarn from the Mystery Bag on hand allows you to test gauge and fabric without dipping into your planned project yarn. This also works well for spinning samples for larger projects.

Share with a Friend

Many people in our community love sharing Mystery Bags. Some split the skeins and work on matching projects, while others save them as gifts. It is a lovely way to share hand-dyed yarn with someone you care about.
