Secret Stash Club Reveal: So Kawaii

Meet our April 2025 fabulously sweet Secret Stash Club colourway! “So Kawaii” is a combo of English and Japanese… “so” (English) and “kawaii” (Japanese for “cute”). Kawaii is an aesthetic in Japan that references cute, adorable, tiny, pretty, and sort of child-like innocence. And this month’s colour is exactly that… it’s pink, cute, and innocent. It’s enjoying, accepting, and identifying with all that is good and joyful.

THE “SO KAWAII” INSPIRATION

It’s been 9 years since I last visited Japan. Before that, when my grandparents were still alive, I would go every few years to visit them and I even spent a month with them during high school.

Both my grandparents were Chinese from Taiwan, but when Taiwan was colonized by Japan (from 1895 to 1945), my grandfather had the opportunity to go to Japan to study. So at 12 years old, he moved to Kagoshima at the the south tip of Japan for high school and later moved north near Tokyo for medical school. My grandparents lived in both Taiwan and Japan, but mostly Japan their whole lives. They spoke Japanese better than any other language and even took on Japanese last names. As a kid, I remember my grandfather being fiercely proud of Japan and very excited introduce my younger brothers and I to the food, the technology, and culture.

This month, my husband and I are bringing our kids to Japan for their first visit. Beyond the yummy food and sights, I want them to learn and know that all of what they see is part of their family story as well. My hope is that my kids will collect all the stories and identities for themselves… that they can identify with all of the above.

Kawaii is an aesthetic in Japan that references adorable, tiny, and a sort of child-like innocence. Pink, adorable, cute, and sweet, find new project inspiration in this month’s Secret Stash Yarn Club special release.

PROJECT IDEAS & INSPIRATION

Our SweetGeorgia BFL+Silk Fine yarn creates fabric with excellent drape and the silk content adds a subtle shimmer that elevates the finished piece. A simple stockinette design with thoughtful details like lace panels or delicate ribbing would let the yarn’s natural beauty shine through. A simple project I’m thinking of making is simple wrist warmers or mitts. Or knit or crochet it into a light and lacey scarf.

SweetGeorgia Team member, Charlotte, chose to test this colourway by knitting a pair of cozy socks. Using the Kelias pattern by Tabetha Hedrick, this textured pattern features easy slipped stitches that create a zig-zagging path.

As always, if you feel like a colour is too bright or bold you can always mix it with another colour to change the overall effect. So, you can hold together a strand of this yarn with a darker or less saturated colour (like a muted, deeper purple or plum) or maybe a slightly lighter or paler colour and knit it together to make the fabric a different colour.

If you are weaving with this yarn, choose a different colour for warp or weft and the colours will optically mix to produce another colour as well. Or use this colour as an accent in a project.
