Create a One-of-a-Kind Tote with Fibre-Reactive Ice Dyeing

Ice dyeing is such a fun and inspiring technique to learn. It is surprisingly simple, which is why Katrina Stewart taught it during a kids’ camp day at the SweetGeorgia studio in 2023. It was such a hit that many parents (and even SweetGeorgia staff) wished they could join in. That’s exactly how this School of SweetGeorgia workshop, Ice-Dyeing with Fibre-Reactive Dyes, came to be. The creative possibilities with ice dyeing are endless, and we’re excited to share one of the projects featured in the course.

As the ice melts, it leaves behind a colour story that can never be recreated.

A Technique with Limitless Potential

Fibre-reactive dyes work best on plant-based materials like cotton and linen. You can dye yarn, quilting cotton, canvas, ready-made garments, or accessories. Think beyond the basics, too, like embroidery floss or a hand-dyed warp. Try dyeing fabric yardage for a blanket, clothing, or even refresh a well-loved grocery tote. The only limit is your imagination.

In the course, Katrina walks through everything you need for a successful dye session. She covers how to set up your workspace safely, what materials to use, and helpful tips for best results. Whether you use bags of ice in the summer or freshly fallen snow in the winter, this is a technique you can enjoy year-round.

As the ice melts, the dye breaks into its primary colours, creating something truly special.

One-of-a-Kind Hand-dyed Tote Bags

This is one of our favourite projects to start with. It’s approachable, affordable, and incredibly satisfying. You can choose to sew your own tote using cotton canvas or start with a pre-made bag; even consider giving new life to an old tote you already have.

You can dye premade bags or create your own by dyeing fabric first and sewing it into something new.

Instructions

  • Begin by following the course instructions to prepare your fibre and set up your dyeing space.
  • Place your tote bag or fabric in the tray, then cover it with ice. Gently sprinkle the fibre-reactive dye powder over the ice.
  • Let the ice melt completely. As it melts, the dye will slowly transfer onto the fabric, creating soft blends and unexpected patterns.
  • Once the ice has fully melted, rinse your fabric until the water runs clear. Then, wash it as you normally would to finish the process.
