Secret Stash Club Reveal: Champagne Dreams

Inspired by the idea of “champagne” or “golden” birthdays, meet our March 2025 Secret Stash Club colourway, Champagne Dreams. It’s overall warm, contrasty, vibrant, striking, and oh so sparkly! Hand-dyed on both yarn and fibre, this month’s Club calls out for you to name yourself a special day and indulge in all your favourite things. A birthday, or any day at all, can be special just because you say so!

THE “CHAMPAGNE DREAMS” INSPIRATION

My kids introduced me to the idea of “golden birthdays” or “champagne birthdays” where your birthday age falls on the same day as your birthday day. Russell turned 11 this past November 11 and Nina will turn 9 on March 9… so we have been celebrating and preparing to celebrate these “golden” birthdays!

This colour inspiration was our chance to bring in a new-to-us yarn with a touch of golden sparkle. It’s just a bit of fun. The 16% Stellina is more sparkly than I could imagine! In our SweetGeorgia CashLuxe Spark, we use 10% silver Stellina and it’s a sprinkle of sparkle… but bumping it up to 16% is really noticeable.

When each of my kids were born, we created a little Club colourway for them. Russell’s was “Night Owl” and had deep blueish purples with a shock of yellow and white. Nina’s was “Eden” and had plummy purples blending into aqua (which is currently her favourite colour). For this month’s celebration colourway, I wanted to incorporate the purples and plums back into the mix, but also include more “champagne” and blush colours. There’s a bit of decadence, indulgence, and joy sprinkled in.

PROJECT IDEAS

For the Yarn

The way this colourway was dyed on the skein gives us the opportunity to play with colour in all sorts of ways. You can work this into small circumference projects that might pool (like wrist warmers or socks), or larger projects like shawls. You can play with “planned pooling” in knitting (see this Club scarf as an example) or “faux ikat” with weaving as well. We demonstrate both of these techniques on the School of SweetGeorgia. Planned pooling is covered in Knitting with Hand-Dyed Colour and faux ikat is the main topic of one of our Handwoven Colour videos.

With one of our skeins, Greta transformed it into a gorgeous handwoven plain weave scarf. Using a 15-dent reed on a rigid heddle loom, she used our SweetGeorgia Merino Silk Lace in Fable as weft. Read more about this sample at the project post.

For the Fibre

A soft and washable merino wool blended 50/50 with glittery and soft tussah silk, this is a luxurious fibre blend for your most special spins.

Since it’s a high contrast colourway with very light and very deep sections, you could aim to keep the colours clear and separate by spinning a single and chain-plying to keep like colours with like. This colourway also lends itself to gradient spins if you break up the colours and group them together into piles of similar colours before spinning.

If you prefer to mix and blend the colours together, you can also try fractal spinning or combo drafting/plying to get more marled effects. (Check out Kim McKenna’s Spin a Hand-Dyed Braid Five Ways online course for inspiration!)

Finally, you can also completely blend the colours together with a blending board or hand carders to get a more heathered appearance to your yarn. We demonstrate all of these techniques on the School of SweetGeorgia in our many spinning courses.
