Secret Stash Weaving: Champagne Dreams Faux Ikat Scarf

Weaving with our March 2025 Club colourway “Champagne Dreams” is a luxurious treat! Featuring the deep plums, purples, and blush pinks along with a touch of golden glitter to celebrate, this month’s Secret Stash Club sample glows. SweetGeorgia Team member Greta was inspired by Felicia’s Faux Ikat scarf pattern, part of the Handwoven Colour course, to test out working with these warm hand-dyed hues. Pairing the Champagne Dreams colourway along with a soft pink made for a truly stunning scarf project!

THE CHAMPAGNE DREAMS COLOURWAY

Inspired by the idea of “champagne” or “golden” birthdays, our March 2025 Secret Stash Club colourway, Champagne Dreams, is warm, contrasty, vibrant, striking, and oh so sparkly!

This was our chance to bring in a new-to-us yarn with a touch of golden sparkle. It’s just a bit of fun. The 16% Stellina is more sparkly than I could imagine! In our SweetGeorgia CashLuxe Spark, we use 10% silver Stellina and it’s a sprinkle of sparkle… but bumping it up to 16% is really noticeable.

Our March Club was also offered on a fabulously soft spinning fibre option as well. Read more about the inspiration behind this month’s colourway »

WEAVING THE CHAMPAGNE DREAMS SAMPLE

Two skeins of yarn is all you need to create a gorgeous handwoven plain weave scarf. Using a 15-dent reed on a rigid heddle loom, Greta used SweetGeorgia Merino Silk Lace in Fable as weft, and wove it at 15 ends and 15 picks per inch. The result is a beautifully silky scarf that is perfect to wear for any celebration!

The scarf takes the skein of yarn with the splashes of pink and ecru, intentionally pooling them out on the warp with the colours distributed beautifully. If you were to use the same yarn as weft, you would get a plaid pattern starting to happen. However, we wanted the keep this sample warp dominant.

To finish the scarf, Greta hemstitched the ends with the fringe left loose. The drape on the fabric is amazing and the entire scarf is buttery soft.

WARPING THE LOOM

  • Warp your rigid heddle loom using your preferred warping method. While winding the warp onto the beam, try to keep even gentle tension on the warp. Greta used a hybrid warping technique to adjust the warp so the colour would pool in different parts of the scarf.
For help with how to warp a loom, we recommend reading Felicia Lo's Direct Warping on a Rigid Heddle Loom post, or Amanda Wood's Hybrid Warping article. You can also check out Felicia's Rigid-Heddle Weaving Basics or Essential Weaving courses at the School of SweetGeorgia for video lessons to guide you through the steps.

WEAVING THE SCARF

  • Using the Merino Silk Lace yarn, weave plain weave for the desired length, placing each weft pick at about 15 picks per inch. Remember to cultivate squares of open space between warp and weft.
  • Complete the hemstitching, cut the hemstitch yarn and weave in the ends.
  • Fix any mistakes in the scarf.
  • Wet-finish the scarf and roll in an absorbent towel to remove excess moisture. Hang to dry completely. Trim the ends and twist the fringe (optional) Enjoy!
