Baker Street Scarf: Warm, Squishy & Wonderfully Waffle Woven

The Baker Street Scarf grew out of Felicia’s desire to create the perfect companion pattern for the Weaving Waffle Weave course at the School of SweetGeorgia. Through countless samples and playful exploration on different shafts and drafts, she was searching for the sweet spot where structure, sett, and yarn truly shine together. If you follow the SweetGeorgia YouTube channel or watch the Taking Back Friday videos, you may already recognize some of these early experiments.

Finding the right balance takes time. When the yarn, draft, and structure finally come together, the result feels deeply satisfying. This is that scarf, and it is pure weaving joy.

Baker Street Scarf

The Baker Street Scarf features a 7-shaft waffle weave with deep, generous pockets (cells) that trap air amazingly. This makes it one of the warmest scarves we have ever woven. The finished cloth measures about half an inch thick, giving it that wonderfully squishy, cushiony feel that invites constant wear.

The analogous colour palette creates harmony while offering just enough contrast to let the waffle texture stand out.

Felicia chose SweetGeorgia Trifecta Fine for the non-superwash wool, which allows the wool to bloom and the fabric to collapse into its signature texture. Mohair adds strength and subtle loft, while silk brings a soft sheen that makes the peaks appear taller and more defined. SweetGeorgia Trifecta Fine also takes dye exceptionally well, giving this scarf its vibrant, glowing colour.

Weaving Waffle Weave

Our latest course from the School of SweetGeorgia explores waffle weave in depth. While it may look complex, waffle weave is surprisingly easy. If you can weave twill, you can weave waffle weave. The threading and treadling are straightforward, making this perfect for beginners!

If you do not have a 7-shaft loom, this course is still for you. In the course, Felicia shows how to adapt waffle weave drafts for 4, 5, 6, or even 16 shafts. She also explains how changing the treadling and tie-up affects the fabric, from soft and slinky to crisp and structured. We also include a 4-shaft towel pattern, which we will share here in the next couple of weeks.

The course goes further by exploring waffle weave as a block weave, opening up endless design possibilities with twill and plain weave. Colour placement also plays a big role in enhancing the pattern, which Felicia goes into detail about, making the options for customization feel truly limitless with this weave structure!
