Cozy Up to Colourwork Knitting with the Vargö Pullover

Image
Part of a collection of samples we knit for h+h Americas 2025, the Vargö Pullover sample, designed by Sari Nordlund, is an absolute dream. Aiming to showcase our various hand-dyed yarns in action, we chose this project to highlight the elegance and versatility of our SweetGeorgia Trifecta Fine base. With the yarn held double, the resulting worsted gauge and high-contrast colourways produced a stunning piece perfect for cozying up in. CHOOSING YARNS FOR THE VARGÖ PULLOVER Knitting with 2 strands of fingering-weight yarn held together allows us to knit the same yarn at a different gauge. This helps to expand your pattern choices to include those that call for worsted or aran weight yarns. When making this adjustment though, it is important to knit a gauge swatch to ensure you are satisfied with the fabric for your sweater. SweetGeorgia team member, Greta, chose our Black Plum and Birch colourways for a fresh combination that is still classic enough. The sweater is warm and beaut...

Knit a Wrist Distaff to Test Your Handspun Yarn’s Durability

Image
There is nothing quite as satisfying as using your own handspun yarn in a project. That feeling becomes even more meaningful when you’re making something substantial, like a sweater. Once you’ve spun your sample singles, hit your target grist, and knit a swatch of your fabric, it might feel like you’re ready to dive into spinning the rest of your yarn. And you might be! But before you go all in, here’s a helpful idea: consider knitting a wrist distaff. At the School of SweetGeorgia , instructor Rachel Smith shares her expertise through courses focused on spinning for specific projects: hats, socks, and yes, sweaters. Her Spin to Knit a Sweater course walks you through how to sample spin before committing to hundreds of grams of fibre, so you can be confident you’ll achieve the yardage and yarn thickness (grist) needed to bring that dream sweater to life. This video snippet from Rachel’s course, Spin to Knit a Sweater , where she shares the benefits of using a wrist distaff. Below, y...

Colour Collab // Kathy’s Handwoven Colour Journey

Image
You never quite know when inspiration will strike. For Kathy, it arrived on braids of fibre, and that fibre came from an idea to inspire others…. which it did, but in the most unexpected way! This post is Kathy’s handwoven colour journey. You never know where colour inspiration will strike! The Spark At the start of 2025, we asked our spinning instructors in the School of SweetGeorgia to share what inspires them most during the winter months. They responded with photos and personal reflections that captured what brings them joy, energy, and creativity during the darkest days of the year. From those inspirations, we created the  Colour Collab Winter Collection , a seasonal palette dyed to reflect the stories, moods, and beauty our instructors shared. There are countless ways to spin colour: fractals, gradients, marled yarns, just to name a few. A braid of hand-dyed fibre doesn’t come with rules. It’s simply a canvas of colour, layered, somewhat blended, and beautifully unpred...
