Cozy Up to Colourwork Knitting with the Vargö Pullover

Part of a collection of samples we knit for h+h Americas 2025, the Vargö Pullover sample, designed by Sari Nordlund, is an absolute dream. Aiming to showcase our various hand-dyed yarns in action, we chose this project to highlight the elegance and versatility of our SweetGeorgia Trifecta Fine base. With the yarn held double, the resulting worsted gauge and high-contrast colourways produced a stunning piece perfect for cozying up in.

CHOOSING YARNS FOR THE VARGÖ PULLOVER

Knitting with 2 strands of fingering-weight yarn held together allows us to knit the same yarn at a different gauge. This helps to expand your pattern choices to include those that call for worsted or aran weight yarns. When making this adjustment though, it is important to knit a gauge swatch to ensure you are satisfied with the fabric for your sweater.

SweetGeorgia team member, Greta, chose our Black Plum and Birch colourways for a fresh combination that is still classic enough. The sweater is warm and beautiful, ready for any outing as well as perfect for staying cozy indoors.

Notes

Regarding the yardage listed for this project, Greta followed the size 3 directions. The entire skein of Black Plum was used.
About the pattern from the designer, Sari Nordlund:
The Vargö pullover is knitted seamlessly top-down starting at the neckband. The yoke is knitted in stranded colorwork. The patterns are easy to knit with short pattern repeats (the maximum length of floats is 5 stitches on 3 rounds only). The sleeves and body are separated at the end of the circular yoke and knitted separately. The back is shaped with optional short-rows to improve the fit. Choose two colors with high contrast (one dark color, one light) for the patterns to show.
Vargö is a part of Suomenlinna island situated in front of my hometown Helsinki. On calm and sunny days, it is a popular day trip destination for people living in Helsinki, but the weather can get quite rough on a stormy day when the wind blows from the open sea. The word Vargö means “the island of wolves”.
