Secret Stash Club Reveal: Lapis Lazuli & Crystal Shard

We’re thrilled to unveil not one, but two enchanting colourways for our June 2025 Secret Stash Club: Lapis Lazuli and Crystal Shard! Inspired by the timeless allure of the lapis lazuli gemstone, this month’s yarn colourway dazzles with its cosmic cobalt hue—a deep, celestial blue. In contrast, Crystal Shard brings a breath of fresh air, shimmering in a luminous light blue highlighted in the luxurious Polwarth+Silk fibre. Whether you’re drawn to the rich depths of royal blue or the ethereal glow of a crystal-clear morning, this month’s club is sure to spark your creativity and delight your senses.

OUR JUNE CLUB COLOUR STORY

Lapis Lazuli

Chosen as one of the 2025 colours of the year, “cosmic cobalt” is a super saturated, striking, royal, and rich blue. This colour is inspired by lapis lazuli, a semi-precious gemstone that has been used in jewelry and art since 7500 BC. This cobalt blue is deep, celestial, and reminiscent of a starry night sky.

Lapis lazuli was ground into powder form and used as the pigment for ultramarine blue paint. This labourious process of grinding the stone into powder made lapis one of the most expensive pigments to use, so this blue colour was often reserved for the robes of angels and other religious figures in paintings.

More recently, my kids learned about lapis lazuli through playing their favourite video game, Minecraft. I love that Minecraft introduced my kids to the idea of extracting colour from minerals and rocks and then being able to dye fabric and wool into vibrant colours. Then when my kids see what we do at the SweetGeorgia dye studio, I think it makes what we do more relevant in their eyes.

Crystal Shard

Originally, we were planning to dye the same deep, super saturated blue “Lapis Lazuli” colour for this month’s Fibre Club. However, wool fibre that has been treated for washability dyes very differently than wool fibre that is untreated. And so with our initial dye tests, our team spun the deeper, darker blue colour and discovered that we needed to alter our dye formulas to work with our untreated wool fibre.

Colours will often dye lighter and more muted on untreated wool. So in order to create a beautiful hand-dyed product on our Polwarth+Silk fibre, we evolved our deep and dark colour story to this gorgeous, shimmering light blue colourway.

Crystal Shard is another reference to Minecraft and has a lovely blue, aqua, and lilac icon in the game. These colours in our fibre look so much like the Crystal Shard icon!

PROJECT IDEAS & INSPIRATION

For the Yarn

Originally, when we looked at Lapis Lazuli and saw the gold streaks through the rock, I envisioned creating something cobalt blue with gold accents. So, it seems like it would be dreamy to knit, crochet, or weave a shawl and trim it with a border of gold thread or ribbon. But a stole, scarf, or shawl in this cobalt blue without any trim would be beautiful as well. We knit a version of the Sheaves lace shawlette designed by Meg Roke with just one skein of SweetGeorgia Mohair Silk Sock for a lovely accessory.

And of course, Mohair Silk Sock fares beautifully as hand-knit socks, so this would always be a great option for your skein of sock yarn. Finally, I’ve been trying out some Tunisian crochet stitches and have been enjoying how hand-dyed yarns play in Tunisian stitch patterns! The colours flow more smoothly and there is less pooling of colours.

For the Fibre

SweetGeorgia Polwarth+Silk feels wonderful to spin… soft, fluffy, and a little bit pillowy. The 2- and 3-ply sample skeins show how the fibre can produce such round and pouffy yarn. The colours also spin and ply to produce a delicately soft mix and blend. I love the idea of using Polwarth+Silk for projects that can be worn next to skin — something like a cowl, scarf, or shawl.
