Secret Stash Club Reveal: Breathing Underwater

This May, dive into a world of tranquil beauty with our latest Secret Stash Club colourway: “Breathing Underwater.” Inspired by a dreamlike journey beneath the waves, this month’s colourway captures the serenity and wonder of moving through an underwater landscape—where light dances through water, vibrant greens and purples shimmer like hidden sea life, and every breath brings a sense of calm and possibility. Let the soothing movement of colour in this month’s yarn wrap you in a peaceful embrace and discover the beauty that comes when you simply allow yourself to breathe.

BREATHING UNDERWATER COLOUR STORY

Recently, I experienced a very vivid dream where I found myself being led into an underwater scene by the head coach of my kids’ ski team. She was walking ahead of me, calmly, with a Mona Lisa smile and turning back to let me know everything was going to be ok and to just feel free to walk and take a breath. And so I took a breath underwater. There was no choking or gasping, no nothing. Everything was fine as long as I took a long, slow, deep breath. And then I got to enjoy the landscape around me, where I could see light filtering in through the water and the plants and fish around me. It was actually quite nice, as long as I took time to breathe slowly.

Now, “Breathing Underwater” is the name of one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite bands, Metric. I used to play Metric songs non-stop while I was dyeing in my tiny basement dye room and have gone to every Emily Haines and Metric show in Vancouver in the past 20 years. Emily’s song “Breathing Underwater” is about experiencing the highs and lows of life — everything from ecstatic joy and elation to feeling like you are drowning and struggling under the weight of life, and asking the question again and again “is this my life?”. It’s a question that helps you find gratitude for the amazing things in your life and also gives you permission to access grace during the hard times.

This colourways is just gorgeous. The transitions and movement of colour just feel like water swirling around me, flooded with weight and light. And the hits of green and purple feel like the surprise of fish and sea life in the water. Take a calm, slow breath and smile.

PROJECT IDEAS

SweetGeorgia Flaxen Silk Fine is one of the first yarns we’ve shared in the Secret Stash Club that is not meant for socks. Linen and silk combine to produce a yarn that is lightweight, airy, and ideal for warm-weather projects.

We love this yarn for knitted or crocheted lace scarves or shawls because it gives such gorgeous drape. It has also worked up beautifully for light tank tops or tees. Charlotte tested out working with this colourway by knitting Tabetha Hedrick’s Every Berry tee pattern. The finished piece is perfect for adding a pop of fun colour to any outfit. (Read more about this sample at the project post!)

You can also hold SweetGeorgia Flaxen Silk Fine together with another yarn to thicken it up and mix up the colours. Or enjoy it on the loom! One of my favourite combinations is using Flaxen Silk Fine as a simple plain weave warp. Amanda Wood highlights this yarn in her Fraser Scarf pattern—a 2/1 twill scarf pattern that was designed for the School of SweetGeorgia.
