Secret Stash Club Reveal: Brown Sugar Pearls
Inspired by the rich, warm hues of our favourite treat, the February 2025 Secret Stash Club colourway is here, “Brown Sugar Pearls”! Hand-dyed on a single sock blank yarn, this month’s colourway captures the comforting tones of bubble tea with just the right balance of warmth and depth. Get ready to sip on creativity and let your stitches flow with these soft, soothing shades.
THE “BROWN SUGAR PEARLS” INSPIRATION
Boba. Bubble Tea. Precious pearls of chewy, sweet goodness. Our team at SweetGeorgia has a regular routine of enjoying boba or bubble tea at the studio. It happens every week… there’s a batch of freshly made boba sitting on the counter and the team are walking around the studio with their bubble tea cups. It’s a thing.

For me, my favourite treat has become the brown sugar boba drink. I’ve learned to make it myself, but honestly I prefer when someone else makes it. I’ve also come to love this drink hot and made with oat milk, a streaky splash of brown sugar syrup, and a bunch of delicious tapioca pearls. I don’t have it on the regular… maybe only a couple times year, really. It’s a special treat for special times.
On another level, the idea of bubble tea is weirdly meaningful to me. My parents immigrated to Canada from Taiwan and I was born and raised here in Canada. The fact that boba drinks originated in Taiwan and the fact that I’m able to enjoy them here in Canada feels like my very thin, very tenuous lifeline to a heritage that is somewhere inside me that I wish I could better access.

PROJECT IDEAS
Single sock yarn blanks are so much fun to work with because they can easily create a gorgeous gradient of colour in your project. I also really like our sock blanks because the gauge of the sock blank allows the dyeing process to sometimes produce tiny speckles of colour.

With these sock blanks, I like to find ways of showing off the gradient effect. In this case, you could knit or crochet a top-down or asymmetric shawl. Knit by sample knitter Irene, Tabetha Hedrick’s Lief pattern was chosen to highlight the full gradient of the sock blank in this fun-to-knit basketweave design.
If you’re thinking about weaving, I’d consider using the single sock blank as weft in a scarf. In my Handwoven Colour classes at the School of SweetGeorgia, we feature sock blanks as both warp and weft in a series of handwoven scarves. Perhaps, if you have the December Yarn shipment (“Hug and a Mug”) you could use that for warp and this sock blank for weft.
