Secret Stash Club Knitting: The Lief Stole

This month’s Secret Stash Club knitting was extra sweet with the warm, comforting tones of our Brown Sugar Pearls yarn colourway. Perfect for wrapping up in these cozy hues, we chose to test this gradient out using Tabetha Hedrick’s Lief pattern. The beautiful basketweave stitches produce a soft textural piece, beautifully highlighting all of the colours in the sock blank yarn.

THE “BROWN SUGAR PEARLS” STORY

Inspired by the rich, warm hues of our favourite treat, our February 2025 Secret Stash Club colourway is called Brown Sugar Pearls. Our team at SweetGeorgia has a regular routine of enjoying boba or bubble tea at the studio. It happens every week… there’s a batch of freshly made boba sitting on the counter and the team are walking around the studio with their bubble tea cups.

This month’s colourway was hand-dyed onto a single sock yarn blank. Capturing all of the comforting tones of bubble tea in a smooth gradient, the resulting yarn has just the right balance of warmth and depth.

KNITTING WITH SOCK BLANK YARN

Single sock yarn blanks are so much fun to work with. They can easily create a gorgeous gradient of colour in your knit, crochet, or weaving project. These sections of colour smoothly flow from one into the next, overlapping with tiny speckles of colour. We’ve worked with sock blank gradients in a number of projects and it’s always fascinating to see how the project turns out. It’s a treat both while you’re crafting the piece and with the finished result!

Knit by sample knitter Irene, Tabetha Hedrick’s Lief pattern was chosen to highlight the full gradient in this fun-to-knit stole design. Easy basketweave ribbing accentuates the rich tonal colours of our Brown Sugar Pearls sock blank colourway. Decadent in its ease and comfort, it’s perfect for year-round wear.

With sock blanks, I like to find ways of showing off the gradient effect. In this case, you could knit or crochet a top-down or asymmetric shawl. Or for weaving, try using the single sock blank as weft in a scarf.

JOIN THE CLUB

We look forward to sharing more project inspiration with colourways we’ve concocted as part of our Secret Stash Club. Telling stories through our colours and sharing how we see the world. We hope you join us there!

Materials

  • 1 SweetGeorgia Single Sock Yarn Blank in Brown Sugar Pearls *see yardage notes

Instructions

  • To knit the Lief stole design, download a copy of the pattern — available at the SweetGeorgia online shop.
  • Cast on the number of stitches shown in the pattern for the fingering-weight version.
  • Follow the set-up row instructions, then begin knitting the Lief Rib pattern.
  • When you have reached your desired stole length or are nearing the end of your yarn, end with Row 6 of the Lief Rib pattern (to match the beginning of the stole). Bind off all stitches loosely.
  • Weave in ends and block to slightly open up the pattern design. Enjoy!

Notes

*Note that this original pattern was designed using a SweetGeorgia Party of Five Tough Love Sock mini-skein set for the fingering-weight version. As the yardage of the sock blank is less than the mini-skein sets, less repeats were worked to create the finished scarf. If you would like to create a longer scarf, we suggest working with two of the gradient sock blanks.
The stole is worked flat from end to end.
The pattern is written to accommodate slight yardage variations in yarn.
