Secret Stash Club Reveal: Favourite Worst Nightmare

Beautiful and different. Our October Secret Stash Yarn Club colourway, “Favourite Worst Nightmare“, was inspired by influenced by the places and people around us. Murky, swampy greens with hits of grey and violet. Hand-dyed on a special yarn base ideal for sock knitting, this month’s yarn was a perfect choice for releasing during the month of Socktober.

THE “FAVOURITE WORST NIGHTMARE” STORY

At first, when we were planning a colourway for October, my mind went to Halloween and how we really haven’t done many Halloween-inspired colours before. With the release of the new Beetlejuice Beetlejuice movie, I was leaning towards a bit of nostalgia with a deep, murky green colourway, tinged with purple. I didn’t want this colourway to be too bold or saturated, but rather subtle and a bit sneaky. I’m a fan of the Tim Burton aesthetic… quirky, creepy.

I was toying with the idea of re-watching the old Beetlejuice movie for this but it’s been years since I’ve been able to sit down and watch any sort of horror film. I used to love scary movies and even hosted several pumpkin carving, horror movie marathons at my house for Halloween when I was younger… and now I can’t bring myself to watch any of them. It’s just not who I am anymore.

Besides movies and media, our colours are often inspired by music… so for the name of this colourway, I chose “Favourite Worst Nightmare”. Favourite Worst Nightmare is the name of the second album by the UK band, Arctic Monkeys, released back in 2007. I loved this album so much when it came out.

In the years since, Arctic Monkeys have released more albums, but the band has evolved completely. Beautiful and different. This is the most inspiring thing to me. That what you were then is not what you are now. That we all evolve and transform. Influenced by places and people around us, we become new. We are the same, but different. I am most in love with the idea of how we can change infinitely.

CELEBRATING SOCKTOBER WITH OCTOBER CLUB

Of course, being Socktober, we selected a yarn base that would be ideal for knitting into socks. With each Socktober, we celebrate exploring different ways of knitting socks.

SweetGeorgia Team Member Anita knit the SweetGeorgia Trifecta Yarn into Holli Yeoh’s fabulous latest sock design “Over Easy Socks“. Holli designed an entirely different way of constructing handknit socks. Knit flat on two needles, this sock construction is also reminiscent of knitting socks on a flatbed knitting machine — something I’d be interested to explore more as well.

If you’ve never knit socks before, I also encourage you to see our School of SweetGeorgia for courses on knitting your first pair of socks — knit either from the cuff down, from the toe up, or even two-at-a-time with long circular knitting needles.
