How to Spin a Beautiful Gradient from Hand-Dyed Spinning Fibre

There are a few ways that spinners can spin a handspun gradient using hand-dyed spinning fibre. It all depends on what kind of yarn you want to spin, and what you might want to make with that yarn.

At today’s Taking Back Friday video, we’ll talk about how to convert handpainted spinning fibre into a gradient yarn. A gradient yarn is where all of the same colour will be at one end of the yarn, and then it transitions into the next colour, and the next, and so on. So when we go to knit, crochet, or weave with the yarn, the colour will slowly fade from one into the next. There are a number of different ways you can go about spinning a gradient, and I’ll share some of the considerations you might want to make when planning your own handspun.

There are also many different ways you can use your gradient yarn. We have a range of online spinning classes at the School of SweetGeorgia which show how to spin gradient yarns, spin a handpainted fibre braid multiple ways, fibre prep methods, and more, I encourage you to come check out the courses there. I’m excited to see your handspun yarn and what you make with it!

Notes from this Episode:

  • I’m spinning with SweetGeorgia BFL+Silk Fibre in the Trail Runner colourway.
  • I’m wearing the Navelli design by Caitlin Hunter, which I co-knit with Greta (see more here). It was knit in SweetGeorgia Tough Love Sock in Black Raspberry and Amber Ale.
  • Our annual School of SweetGeorgia Back to School Sale is running until the end of September. Use the code BACKTOSCHOOL24 to save 15%!
  • We are hosting a year-long Multicraftual Make-Along where we are currently focusing on spinning gradient yarns. You can find the spin-along chat at our SweetGeorgia Discord space (in the #multicraftual-maker channel) and at the Community Forums for SOS members.
