There’s something instantly captivating about lace knitting, especially when it’s wrapped around your shoulders in a rich, jewel-toned shawl. The delicate openings and textured stitches look intricate, yet they’re created with a simple rhythm of yarn overs and decreases. If you’re ready to move beyond basic lace and try a pattern that feels elevated (without feeling intimidating), the Twig shawl by Felicia Lo is a beautiful next step.
THE BEAUTY OF LACE KNITTING
Knitting lace makes you feel like a grown-up knitter. There’s something magical about how a few yarn overs and decreases can shift stitches left and right, transforming the fabric before your eyes.
Once you’ve knit one or two beginner lace patterns, how do you jump to a more complex lace pattern? A design where lace truly changes the shape and texture of the finished piece? One way to make that leap feel easier is to choose a thicker yarn with great stitch definition. That’s why we decided to update Felicia Lo’s beloved Twig shawl pattern, adding a fingering-weight version alongside the original laceweight design.

The shawl is worked from the top down, beginning with a clean, simple stockinette body. Then comes the delicate Twig lace border, where the pattern really shines. And whether you prefer charts or written instructions, you can follow along in the format that suits you best as both are included in the pattern.

For our studio samples, we chose two beautiful shades in our best-selling SweetGeorgia Tough Love Sock. This vibrantly coloured fingering-weight yarn creates a soft, drapey fabric that layers effortlessly over your favourite jacket. We honestly can’t decide which shawl we like best; both Mulberry and Lichen glow in this pattern.
