A SHAWL THAT GROWS WITH YOU (AND YOUR SKILLS)

The Starless Night shawl is an asymmetrical shawl that begins with rows of single crochet, increasing on one side every row. That simple structure makes it approachable, while the lace details keep it engaging ans satisfying. It is especially great for advanced beginners ready for a project that builds confidence without feeling complicated.

Easy to Memorize

Pairing an easy-to-memorize pattern with a beautiful skein of yarn is one of our favourite ways to enjoy time spent traveling, during wait times at appointments, or for quiet breaks at home. Charlotte’s design is the kind of crochet you can settle into quickly; once you find the rhythm, it becomes the perfect companion for those “I have 20 minutes to crochet” moments.

Choose your Yarn Weight: Lace or Fingering

Originally, Starless Night was crocheted in the beautiful SweetGeorgia Merino Silk Lace yarn, which gives the finished fabric an elegant drape and a subtle glow. The deep, inky blue of the original sample feels fitting for the pattern’s name, like a calm midnight tone you can wrap around your shoulders.

With our pattern update, you can now find instructions for both lace-weight and fingering-weight versions. This means you can choose the fabric you want (delicate and airy, or a little more substantial) and use the yarn that best matches your spring-making mood.

Using a fingering-weight yarn, such as our SweetGeorgia Tough Love Sock, is also a great way to improve your crochet skills with an accessory you’ll love to wear or gift to a friend.

Spring Colour Inspiration: Let the Lace Shine

Whether you choose a soft, semi-tonal shade or a fun splashy colourway, the lace shines as the perfect background. Bright spring shades can add energy and playfulness, while deeper tones feel classic and dramatic.

If you’re ready to lean into colour, consider something lively and joyful like Rosé Day or Bubble Wand, where every row feels like a fresh reveal as the shawl grows.

Notes

From the original pattern design:
Even in the dark, starless night, peace is found in the simple movements of the crochet hook. The pattern is wonderfully easy to memorize, resulting in openwork that eases out like the sun. This piece is dedicated to our loved ones, who might need a little company on those starless nights.
