Fuel on the Fire Ignited Us to Weave the Colour Field Scarf

We just can’t help ourselves. When we make a new colourway, we want to see it in as many projects as possible. This is especially hard with a limited-time colourway. How do you choose a project that showcases stunning colours, demonstrates depth of hue, and allows room to mix and play within a design? Sometimes the colour decides for us. As soon as we saw how the colours shifted in our Lunar New Year colourway, Fuel on the Fire, we knew this yarn was destined to be a Colour Field handwoven scarf.

The Colour Field Scarf

Many rigid heddle weavers start with a fingering-weight yarn scarf. The sett is balanced, and weaving in plain weave keeps it easy for newer weavers. But after a few projects like this, it is natural to start looking for something new.

The Colour Field scarf is an excellent next step. It replaces the fingering-weight weft with a lace-weight yarn, creating an overall warp-dominant appearance. What does that mean? The warp yarn takes the lead in the finished look. The weft still plays a role by casting a subtle hue or shade over the entire project, but the movement of colour in the warp is what truly draws the eye. This structure allows special yarns to shine in the final piece, just like our Lunar New Year colourway, Fuel on the Fire!

Warp: Fuel on the Fire

This is our limited-time Lunar New Year colourway for 2026. We have an entire post that shares how we are celebrating the Lunar New Year with this colourway. But why use it specifically in the Colour Field scarf?

The Fuel on the Fire colourway features a clear palindrome sequence dyed analogously, with each colour shifting and moving like flames in a fresh fire. As the colours travel along the warp, they interact and soften one another. Even though each colour is bold, the overall effect feels unified. It is a beautiful way to use such an energetic colourway.

Weft: Tabasco

Since bringing in Knoll 17/2 Merino Lambswool, we are always looking for an opportunity to use it. The colourway Tabasco is a perfect complement to Fuel on the Fire. It does not compete for attention. Instead, it gently settles in, “stoking the fire” while bringing balance to the project.

We love how two different colourways, fibres, and yarn weights come together in a single piece. Each element supports the others, creating a thoughtful and cohesive partnership within the project. We couldn’t be happier with how this project turned out.

Learn Weaving with the School of SweetGeorgia

The Colour Field Scarf is a free pattern included in the Rigid Heddle Weaving Basics course at the School of SweetGeorgia. However, you can purchase it separately in our SweetGeorgia shop if you are not a member. And even though it was written for a rigid heddle loom, it can easily be adapted for a multi-shaft loom.

We have woven this scarf a few times now, the first version, with SweetGeorgia Tough Love Sock as warp and SweetGeorgia Merino Silk Lace as weft. In the second version, we used the SweetGeorgia Tough Love Sock Hexa Hue set with the SweetGeorgia 20/2 Mulberry Silk. Each time we make new combinations, we are blown away by how amazing this pattern shines every time!

In the school, we always encourage members to explore different colours and yarn combinations. Of course, sometimes sett or picks per inch change with using different yarns, which has happened in each of these versions, but only slightly. If you need advice on choosing yarns or colourways, please reach out to our team or join the School of SweetGeorgia to get support directly from our instructors.
