Secret Stash Club Knitting: Heathered Sunset Shawl

Our October Secret Stash Club yarn, Pumpkin Patch, echoes winding paths of pumpkins in the new Heathered Sunset shawl sample. With rich oranges, golds, and rust browns tipped with green, the single sock blank is ready to be transformed into something special. Designed by Tabetha Hedrick, the classic lace design brings this warm and cozy gradient to life, celebrating the beauty of autumn with every row.

THE PUMPKIN PATCH STORY

For our October 2025 yarn, Pumpkin Patch, we looked to memories of hand-sewn Halloween costumes and trips to the local pumpkin patch. The earthy, warm colours of this season were translated onto a single sock blank, celebrating the warmth and playfulness of fall.

Inspired by Felicia’s annual visits to the local pumpkin patch, this month’s colourway is filled with rich autumn oranges, golds, and rust browns tipped with green! Read more about the sock blank at the colour reveal post.

KNITTING THE HEATHERED SUNSET SHAWL

You can use the Pumpkin Patch sock blank on its own, or combine it with a second skein to create stripes or blocks of colour. One sock blank is however enough to knit a simple lace scarf, such as Tabetha Hedrick’s Heathered Sunset pattern. This triangular shawl is worked starting from the back neck, center-out. Featuring classic lace in a well-loved shawl shape, eyelets in diamonds travel across the fabric. These wander in simple columns framed by stockinette stitch.

For the knitting of this month’s sample, knitter Elaine Yee worked with US 4 / 3.5mm needles. Elaine followed the pattern as written, working the Border rows 1-12 one additional time, then binding off. This was done to use more of the yarn, and Elaine ended with only 3g of the sock blank left. Note that due to differences in gauge, this may vary when knitting your own Heathered Sunset shawl.

Sock blanks offer a unique way to dye colour gradients, as we dye directly on the knitted tube of fabric. If you’re new to working with them, we suggest watching Tabetha’s tutorial on how to use a single sock blank.

Notes

Note that the pattern calls for size 6 US / 4 mm circular needles. Elaine knit with US 4 / 3.5mm needles and followed the pattern as written, working the border section rows 1-12 one additional time before binding off.
The extra Border section was knit to use up the yarn, with only 3g remaining. (The Body + 1 Border section used 106g, and the extra Border section used ~21g.)
