Crank Fully Hemmed Socks on Your Circular Sock Machine (CSM)

Circular sock machine (CSM) knitting with hand-dyed yarns feels like magic. With just a few cranks, your CSM produces a stunning, seamless tube. It is a focused yet meditative work you could lose yourself in, watching the colours shift and flow through your machine.

Then one day, you might wonder, is there more than just cranking endless tubes? Perhaps you no longer want to hand-knit heels, toes, and cuffs. Could the entire sock be made from start to finish on your CSM? The answer is yes. New to the School of SweetGeorgia, Circular Sock Knitting: Foundations course with Felicia Lo. This course includes a recipe for three sock variations to expand your hand-cranking skills!

Circular Sock Knitting: Foundations

In our newest School of SweetGeorgia course, Felicia Lo guides you through the essentials of using your CSM. She shares her best tips, helps you understand the anatomy of your machine, since each brand is slightly different, and walks you through everything from setup and tools to creating cast-on bonnets and heel snakes. By the end, you will have three complete pairs of socks and the confidence to keep exploring what else your machine can do!

Fully Hemmed Socks

Simple, satisfying, and beautifully finished from top to toe, these socks are worked entirely on the CSM. Felicia explains how to find the exact formula for a perfect fit, adjust your gauge, and enjoy the smooth flow of SweetGeorgia Tough Love Sock yarn through your machine. The superwash merino takes dye brilliantly, giving your finished socks a vivid, polished look.

Mock Ribbed Socks

If your CSM does not have a ribber, you can still create a timeless ribbed effect. Using only the basic cylinder, this design drops stitches in a strategic way to create a soft texture and a classic look without extra equipment.

Striped Socks

Always eye-catching, striped socks are perfect for using leftover scraps or mini skeins. While they begin like a basic hemmed sock, Felicia demonstrates how to weave in ends as you go and offers three different stripe techniques so you can choose your favourite effect.

Perfectly Grafted Toes

There are many ways to close the toe, but Felicia’s method is both simple and flawless. It leaves no rough edges or holes, just a smooth, comfortable finish.

Weight on a cast on bonnet
  • Follow the instructions to hang the hem.
  • Crank the leg to the desired length. Ensure that you move the weights as needed while knitting the sock.
  • Use the recipe instructions to make a short row heel, moving unwanted needles out of the way.

  • Follow the short row toe instructions, then remove the sock and graft the toe.

Mocked Ribbed Sock

  • This sock is worked the same as above, with the exception of dividing the number of stitches to be made on the machine while being evenly spaced.
Refer to the Diagram for stitch counts for 48- to 72-cylinder.

Striped Socks

  • These socks are again the same as the Basic Sock, but pay attention to the yarn change instructions.
