Secret Stash Knitting: Creekside Cowl

As August brings the height of summer, our Secret Stash Club members are treated to a truly refreshing experience with this month’s yarn: Summer at the Lake. Inspired by the tranquil blues, greens, and aquas of a sunlit lakeshore, this hand-dyed double sock blank captures the essence of cool, glassy water and the sparkle of sunlight on its surface. To showcase these luminous hues, we turned to the free Creekside Cables Cowl pattern by Tabetha Hedrick—a design that beautifully blends plaited cables and airy lace. This cozy, one-skein cowl is the perfect project to celebrate the season’s vibrant energy.

THE SUMMER AT THE LAKE STORY

The blue, green, and aqua shades of our Summer at the Lake yarn colourway are inspired by the clear, refreshing feeling of a dip in the lake. These hand-dyed hues were carefully applied to a double sock blank to showcase the beautiful gradient. The resulting yarn features subtle speckles and lighter areas reminiscent of sunlight dancing on the water.

KNITTING THE CREEKSIDE COWL

Double sock yarn blanks are a great choice for knitters looking to create two identical items. They are great for making matching socks or wrist warmers. With each blank containing two strands of yarn dyed in the same gradient, you can achieve beautifully coordinated results. Another option is to knit both of these strands together directly from the sock blank. It’s a quick and easy way to start a worsted-weight project.

For this month’s sample knitting, we chose the free Creekside Cables Cowl pattern by Tabetha Hedrick to highlight this idea. Expertly knit by Deborah (with just a single yard to spare!), this cozy cowl is the perfect project to celebrate the season’s relaxing energy.

Instructions

  • Download the Creekside Cables Cowl pattern for free, available from our online shop and Ravelry. The pattern is originally written for a worsted-weight yarn, however we held two strands together of a fingering-weight yarn to achieve a similar gauge.
  • Cast on the required number of stitches. Place a marker to identify the beginning of the round and work the edge ribbing.
  • Continue following the instructions to knit the cabled repeats.
  • Work the ribbing as instructed for the final edge of the piece.
  • Bind off loosely. Weave in yarn ends, block, and let dry fully. Enjoy!
