Keep Your Spinning Wheel Running Smooth With Daily Oiling 

Katrina Stewart is the instructor a popular course in the School of SweetGeorgia, Spinning Up a Level. In this course, she explains how to take you from a beginner spinner to understanding different spinning draws, comparing samples, and starting to spin intentionally. But as important as this is, wheel maintenance is just as crucial. For this reason, she created the workshop Tuning Up Your Wheel. This video is a snippet from the course explaining how oiling your wheel each time you sit down can create a more enjoyable spinning experience for you (and your wheel!).

Consistent maintenance, such as regular cleaning and oiling, is key to extending the life of your wheel. Treat your wheel as a tool, and keeping it in good condition will ensure it lasts for many years.

Day-To-Day Spinning Wheel Oiling

Equipment

  • 1 Spinning Wheel

Materials

Instructions

  • Oil the Flyer's Shaft
    Begin by adding a few drops of spinning wheel oil to the shaft of the flyer. Then, attach the bobbin and give it a gentle turn to help distribute the oil evenly around the shaft.
  • Oil the Orifice
    Depending on the wheel, add a couple of drops of oil to where the orifice meets the wheel. Put the flyer onto the maiden and give it a spin to spread the oil.
  • Oil the Shaft Support
    Add a drop of oil to the end of the shaft that fits into the back support of the wheel. Give it a little turn to evenly spread the oil.

Notes

All these steps will help your wheel spin smoothly and reduce friction.
Every spinning wheel is unique, so follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for care and maintenance.

Joining Crochet Granny Squares – It’s Easier Than I Imagined!

I recently learned how to continuously “join as you go” (JAYG) for crochet granny squares and I LOVE this technique. And so on today’s Taking Back Friday video , I want to share an update on my Jethro Cardigan project and how I joined the granny squares. As I shared in a previous vlog episode , I’ve been making crochet squares out of three different sets of our Superwash DK Party of Five mini-skein sets. I finished making the 36 granny squares needed, which no two are identical. However, after crocheting all of the squares, I was stuck on how to join them together. They simply sat finished in a pile for a couple of weeks. Luckily, Tanis provided resources with her pattern and one of them was for the “Join as You Go” tutorial. It was fantastic. I’m so proud and excited that I’m almost done. I love how it is turning out, and playing with colours has been the most fun part of this project. Winterful Weave-Along: Weaving WIPs

Part of the fun of any make-along is to connect with fellow makers — to share your progress, ask questions, and be inspired by others’ work. We’ve absolutely loved seeing all of your photos and the journey of all of the weave-along weavers both at our Discord and SOS Forum spaces. SweetGeorgia Team Member, Greta, has now started weaving her second Kaleidoscope Scarf ! Helping to add some additional needed yardage for the border colour with our SweetGeorgia Individual Mini-Skeins (in Bison), Greta is following her own weft order — adding in some yellow picks and writing the order on a sticky note so the pattern can be easily repeated.
