Puff Stitches Made Easy: Learn to Crochet This Textured Stitch!

A puff stitch is a fun, textured cluster of stitches that adds a wide, thick, and three-dimensional “puff” effect to your crochet projects. Designers love using puff stitches because they create a bold, rounded shape that really pops. The most common puff stitches use three, four, or five clusters, but feel free to get creative and try as many clusters as your hook can handle! Just keep in mind that the more clusters you use, the puffier, wider, and harder the stitch becomes. Once you’ve made your puff, it’ll appear on the other side of your work, which is why it’s often worked on the “wrong side” of the fabric.

Let’s get started on how to do this amazing textured stitch. You can find the written instructions just below the video!

3-Cluster Puff Stitch

  • Yarn over.

  • Insert your hook into the stitch.
  • Yarn over and pull it through. This creates your first cluster. You should have three loops on your hook. Two loops are the first cluster; one is the loop we started with. Make sure your tension remains loose.

  • Now, for the second cluster, yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch. Yarn over and pull through. You should now have five loops on your hook. Two loops for each cluster, and the last one is what we started with.
  • For the third cluster, yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch again, yarn over, and pull through. Now, you have seven loops on your hook. A pair of loops for each cluster plus the loop we started with.
  • Tug on all the loops to make sure everything feels even.
  • To finish, yarn over and pull through all six cluster loops on the hook. Make sure your hook is facing down as you pull through to prevent the yarn-overs from catching on the hook. This makes the process smoother and easier.

  • Yarn over again and pull through the last two loops.
  • And you’re done! Enjoy your puff stitch!

4- & 5-Cluster Puff Stitches

  • Here’s what it looks like for a 4-cluster puff:
Follow the same steps as before, but add another cluster. After you finish your 4th cluster, you'll have even more loops on your hook, but the steps for pulling through and finishing are identical.
  • And for the 5-cluster puff stitch, again, it is the same! With each added cluster, the puff stitch grows wider and puffier, giving your crochet a wonderful textured look!
