Creating The Minimalist: A Double-Width, Double Weave Blanket for WEFT

We are excited to share that our very own Felicia Lo is part of the premier issue of WEFT Magazine: The Magazine for Handweavers! For their first issue, plain weave takes the spotlight. Covering everything you may want to know about this simple and versatile structure, Plain Weave includes Felicia’s article on double weave as well as her new “The Minimalist Double-Width Double Weave Blanket” weaving pattern.

WEFT’S PREMIER ISSUE: PLAIN WEAVE

The Summer 2025 issue of WEFT is available to digital subscribers now as well as for shipping. We can’t wait to dive into this issue, filled with inspirational content from a number of talented weavers. WEFT hopes to inspire new weavers as well as offer further insight, teaching, and reflections for the intermediate weaver.

Plain Weave covers everything on this versatile weaving structure:

“From language to execution to testing to experimentation, this issue is thorough and beautiful. A range of talented and brilliant authors put plain weave through the paces. Through the lens of plain weave, this issue delves deep into denting, sett, “permanent” creases, draw-in, take-up, shrinkage, combining different fiber types, adding texture, perfect selvedges, the effects of yarn’s twist direction, and so much more. Plus, projects! There are several gorgeous projects. You’ll not only be inspired by this issue, you’ll learn so much!”

FELICIA’S DOUBLE-WIDTH DOUBLE WEAVE BLANKET

What’s better than one layer of plain weave cloth? Two layers of plain weave cloth, being woven at the same time! Wrap yourself in a gorgeous handwoven blanket that features a minimalist and modern approach to colour.

For this blanket, Felicia wanted to create something that could be woven on a compact 4-shaft loom yet still be wide enough to serve beautifully as a lap blanket. Woven at 24″ / 61 cm wide in the reed, this blanket opens up to about 48″ / 122 cm but then settles down to 42″ / 107 cm wide after wet finishing. It’s the perfect size to cozy under.

At the School of SweetGeorgia, you can learn more about weaving double weave at Felicia’s Double Weave on 4-Shafts online course. Included with the course, you will also find patterns for a mini-sampler, a bread bag, plus a double-width double weave blanket. Work through the different sequences that you can weave in order to produce either two separate layers of fabric, a tube of fabric where the two layers are joined on both sides, or a double-width fabric where the two layers are joined on one side.
