Daedalus Dove vs. Starling: A Side-by-Side e-Spinner Comparison

In our latest Taking Back Friday video, we’re taking a closer look at two beautifully designed e-Spinners from Daedalus: the well-loved Starling and the brand new Dove.

If you’ve been curious about how the Daedalus Dove and Starling e-Spinners compare, this post will walk you through those details. From portability and controls to bobbin capacity and overall feel, each of these tools offers something a little different.

The Daedalus Dove

The Dove sits comfortably between two existing models in the Daedalus lineup. It’s smaller than the Starling, but larger than the Sparrow, offering a balanced middle ground. And while it’s smaller than the Starling, it still feels solid and well-made.

Portability and Travel

This is where the Dove really shines. It’s light enough to carry in one hand and compact enough to fit into something as simple as a lunch bag. It uses friction-fit parts rather than screws, which means it breaks down quickly and reassembles just as easily; it’s an easy companion for spinning on the go.

The Starling is portable in a different way. It can be moved and even packed down for travel, especially in its flat-pack form, but requires more time to take it apart and build it again. Between the spinner, controller, and power supply, it feels more like a small setup than a grab-and-go tool.

Controls and User Experience

The Starling and Dove take two different approaches to control.

The Starling uses a tap-on, tap-off controller. You can start and stop spinning with a simple tap, and adjust speed and direction through the controller interface. It’s intuitive and easy to use, especially once your preferred settings are programmed in.

The Dove, on the other hand, uses a single dial system. Everything happens through this dial, from powering on to adjusting speed. The direction is controlled by a small switch.

This creates a slightly different experience. With the Dove e-spinner, you’re more actively setting and adjusting your speed. With the Starling, it feels a bit more automatic and hands-off once you’re spinning.

Bobbin Capacity

Bobbin size is another key difference.

  • Dove bobbins hold about 8 ounces of fibre
  • Starling bobbins hold up to 12 ounces of fibre

To put that into perspective, a typical hand-dyed braid is 4 ounces.

Dove bobbins
The Dove also offers flat-pack bobbins that can be taken apart for easier travel, which is a thoughtful addition for spinners on the move.

Speed and Performance

Both e-Spinners are capable of impressive speeds.

  • Starling: up to approximately 2360 RPM
  • Dove: up to approximately 1850 RPM

Many spinners will find themselves working well below these maximums. Comfortable spinning somewhere in the middle range, where both machines perform smoothly and quietly.

Tensioning

Both models use a similar tensioning system with a brake band and spring.

The Dove offers both nylon and Kevlar brake band options, allowing experimentation in how the tension feels. Adjustments are made through a dial.

The Starling has a Kevlar brake and includes both micro-adjustments on the dial and larger tension changes with the side bar, giving you a bit more flexibility in fine-tuning.

Small Details That Make a Difference

Both the Starling and the Dove are impressively quiet and smooth. The Dove has a slightly lighter, softer feel while spinning. The Starling feels a bit more substantial and grounded, similar to the difference between a lace flyer and a standard flyer. Neither is disruptive, and both are comfortable to use in shared spaces or while relaxing at home.

Dove threader
Both e-Spinners include magnetic orifice threaders that attach directly to the machine, so they’re always within reach.

Which One Is Right for You?

Choosing between the Dove and the Starling really comes down to how you like to spin. The Dove is a wonderful option if you value portability, simplicity, and a lightweight setup. It’s easy to carry, easy to assemble, and beautifully efficient. The Starling is ideal if you prefer a more robust, fully featured setup with higher capacity and a more programmable control system. It’s a reliable, all-in-one e-Spinner.

Both are thoughtfully designed tools that do exactly what they’re meant to do: add twist smoothly, quietly, and efficiently. And as always, the real magic of spinning happens in your hands. These tools simply support that process, making it more enjoyable and accessible.
