Celebrate Your Kitchen with the Breakfast Towels Collection
Weavers know how to celebrate their kitchen better than most makers. While knitters often begin with hats or shawls, crocheters with pillows and scarves, and sewists with blankets and bags, weavers start with towels (and they tend to accumulate quickly!). Towels offer an easy way to try new techniques, they are treasured as gifts, and they are made of cotton or linen that is simple to care for.
They are also a wonderful way to play with new colour palettes. Earlier this month, when we shared our blog post, Celebrate with Colour: Give Weaving Drafts a Holiday Makeover, centred around swapping colours in weaving drafts, we could not resist weaving some of those ideas. The first project was the Wall of Troy Runners, which we shared a couple of weeks ago. Now, we are excited to share the Breakfast Towels Collection.
Colour and Weave on a Rigid Heddle Loom
Originally woven for the Colour and Weave on a Rigid Heddle Loom course for the School of SweetGeorgia, Amanda Wood designed the Breakfast Eggs Towels to allow members to practice the techniques taught in the course: learn how to sample new yarns, and explore colour and weave techniques in a sample gamp. By the end of the course, you can either weave the Breakfast Eggs Towel pattern, or design your own pattern by using your gamp to draft something entirely your own!
The Breakfast Towels Collection
The Original Breakfast Eggs Towels
Some of the Breakfast Eggs Towels have larger areas of only one colour, with alternating white and yellow areas, similar to a fried egg; while some of the other towels blend the two colours, more like scrambled eggs. Deliciously fun!
Woven with Gist 3/2 Beam, these towels are squishy and soft. How soft? We have used Gist 3/2 Beam for baby blankets!
The Refreshed Breakfast Towels
While the original towels have a sunshine summer vibe, we wondered what would happen if we swapped both colours. We wanted something to feel like crisp winter air, and we could not be happier with the result. Woven in Maurice Brassard 8/4 Unmercerized Cotton, the yarn comes in a range of colours, and weaves up quickly!
Since we were refreshing the pattern, we thought, why not add a 4-shaft version, so all weavers can join in.
Two Warps, Six Unique Towels
We love these towels! Especially because they come with two warp options and three variations for each warp. You end up with a set of six towels, each of which feels unique, yet still belongs together.
The first warp uses an easy all-over houndstooth colour sequence and stripes. The second warp uses simple striping to create a colour and weave highlight in the corner of the towels. Both warps create optical illusions (colour and weave techniques) that make these patterns look more complex than they really are.

Instructions
Set up
-
Download the pattern from the School of SweetGeorgia.
-
Choose your warp and yarn options.
-
Warp your loom using your preferred warping technique.
-
Dress your loom and prepare your shuttles. Wind your bobbins if you are using a boat shuttle.
-
Weave a waste yarn header.

Weaving the Towels
-
Note: you may want to weave 1 inch / 2.5 centimetres in a thinner yarn like 8/2 cotton at the start of the warp, before and after the cut line, and at the end. The finer weft creates a lighter fabric that makes folding and sewing the hem much easier.
-
Follow the directions to weave your chosen warp and towel. Or weave something entirely your own and choose your own sequence!
-
Between each towel, weave one pick in a contrasting colour to mark the cutting line.
-
Continue until the entire warp has been woven.

Finishing
-
After weaving three towels, cut the cloth from the loom. Cut along the marked lines.
-
Fold the hem edges twice and sew them in place. Make sure to catch all raw edges. You can do this by hand or by machine. Use pins or clips to keep everything in place.
-
Hand-wash or machine-wash the towels.
-
Either hang the towels to dry or place them in the dryer. Do not dry them completely.
-
While they are still slightly damp, press them with an iron.
-
Place them around your kitchen and enjoy.
