Is This Time Well Spent? A 2024 Tour de Fleece Recap

Image
I have one bobbin from my Tour de Fleece spinning this year which represents 10 hours of my life. It’s 100 grams of single-ply yarn that I spun on my spinning wheel this summer. And on today’s Taking Back Friday episode , I’m asking myself if this time well spent? My 2024 Tour de Fleece spinning progress — Charollais in Summer Sunsets As we get closer to September and the start of school for the kids, I’ve been thinking a lot about that question, “what did you do this summer?”. I think about how Tour de Fleece started on June 29. And between June 29 and August 22… nearly 2 months, I could not dedicate more than 10 hours to spinning. And so all I have is this bobbin of single-ply yarn. Looking at the amazing members of our School of SweetGeorgia and community members on the SweetGeorgia Discord channel, I’m seeing all the gorgeous finished hand spun skeins that people have spun during Tour de Fleece. Spinners have completed multiple skeins… pounds of fibre. But I have this ONE bo...

How to Crank a Sock with Contrasting Colours WITHOUT Cutting the Main Yarn

Image
A few weeks ago, I shared a technique for cranking handpainted socks with contrasting heels and toes on the CSM . It’s a great method, BUT it can cause a disruption or a “jog” in the pooling of a handpainted sock yarn. The visual “jog” was bothering me so much, I had to find another way of making socks on the circular sock knitting machine with contrasting heels and toes WITHOUT cutting the main yarn. This jog in colour was keeping me up at night. (Watch the knitting of this sock here .) And so on today’s Taking Back Friday vlog episode , we are going to knit these contrasting heels and toes socks with a different method where we will hopefully avoid any sort of disruption to the colour pattern in your yarn. Switching to waste yarn after having knit the contrasting toe in “Dark Orchid”. Two completed CSM socks. Left sock with cutting the main yarn, right sock without cutting the main yarn. If you like these episodes about the circular sock knitting machines, I do have a ...

Crocheting Granny Squares for the Jethro Cardigan

Image
Crochet Granny Squares are just so much fun to make! Just… one… more round… one more square… For today’s Taking Back Friday episode, I talk about the crochet granny squares I have been making at every possible moment for this past month. I’ve recently been inspired by the Jethro cardigan design by Tanis Lavallee from Tanis Fiber Arts. The Jethro cardigan combines both knitting and crochet in one project. You start by crocheting a bunch of classic granny squares, and then join them all together. Then, you pick up for knitting the sleeves and trim. It’s a really fun and easy way to play with colour, especially with making your own palettes and colour combinations. Mini-skein sets work perfectly to allow for fun colour play with these granny squares The goal of making these granny squares is to play with colour, but I didn’t want to go and buy 6 to 10 full skeins of DK-weight yarn in order to get enough of each colour. And so, I feel like the answer here is DK-weight mini-skeins . ...
